Castello di Volpaia
Castello di Volpaia is a fortified village of medieval origins dating back to 1172. Within its walls is one of the highest elevated wineries in the region, owned and operated by Carlo Mascheroni and Giovanna Stianti. 1982- 1994, together with the gallerist Luciano Pistoi, they hosted modern art exhibits. Artists made specific works for Volpaia which belong to their private collection together with the works that were shown.
Placed at Volpaia are the works of British installation artist and filmmaker, Isaac Julien courtesy of Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam and Galerie Nara Roesler, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The one screen video projection and photographs from “Stones Against Diamonds” were filmed in the remote caves of Iceland. These works were first presented at the 56th Venice biennale 2015. The work is inspired by a passage from a letter of Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian born Brazilian modernist architect. “Stones Against Diamonds” explores the inner sanctums of the unconscious through reflection.
Philippe Chancel will show a photograph from his Arirang serie from DPRK 2006.
Also shown are the photographs of Edson Chagas (Angola)”Found NOT Taken” photographic series that was shown in the Angola Pavilion, Venice biennale 2013.
